A little earlier this month of May while walking in the morning, before the business of the day expressed itself, I was bathed in an unusual array of bird song.
The rhythmic cooing of Mourning Doves was my auditory background when I was surprised to hear my favorite bird song from a wren who was making her 2022 debut. A red wing black bird now was contributing to the cooing of the Doves in creating a backdrop for even more visitors that I had yet to discover. The honking of a Canada goose arrested my attention, especially since the sound was stationary. As if out of a cartoon, a goose was standing on top of a nearby chimney, announcing itself and hopefully connecting with a flock. Completing my auditory bathing of bird song, an owl chimed in with its rhythmic, who, who, who, who. Owls are usually finished with their night patrol by day, so this owl's presence was special. And perhaps he was still hungry and hunting? There was a special feeling to the morning and the accompaniment of all these birds validated this. It's a wonderful feeling to witness nature and especially her creatures. It's good to remember the oneness of all creation and that I am one with these winged ones. Native Americans have a phrase, 'O Mitakuye Oyasin', which means, 'to all my relations'. I say this to myself or out loud whenever I see a dead animal or bird along the road. By doing so I am honoring the creature.

This past Saturday morning I had the pleasure of being outside with a family of three for the purpose of Forest bathing. Signs of Spring are early, and birds are busy with activities: mate finding, nest building, and celebrating nature returning to growth and new life.
At one point during our time together I was inspired to have us all stand in stillness and just watch and listen to nature. After a few minutes I heard what sounded like low flying aircraft flying overhead. I looked to one of the family members and her facial expression mirrored what I was feeling: fear and not understanding the sound. It was a group of four mallards flying so close overhead that it sounded like aircraft. We were stunned and delighted. Two male mallards and two female mallards executed a smooth and deliberate landing in the pond we were standing next to. We were amazed and grateful to experience this event. Nature is full of surprises and new experiences, and this gift was most appreciated by all of us being still and quiet. I awoke this morning still feeling triggered and upset following an event from yesterday.
Walking outside this morning really helped clear my upset and within my new inner calm I was reminded by Spirit that each being's essence, including myself, is love. So much time is spent with our own issues and the issues belonging to others. Remembering that my essence is love created a welcome space within me. As always, healing my issues is my work. As I clear and heal my statements of woundedness, then I'm not triggered by other's issues. Instead of reacting, I am able to observe and when I'm really at my best, observing with compassion and remembering the other is also love. |
