A little earlier this month of May while walking in the morning, before the business of the day expressed itself, I was bathed in an unusual array of bird song.
The rhythmic cooing of Mourning Doves was my auditory background when I was surprised to hear my favorite bird song from a wren who was making her 2022 debut. A red wing black bird now was contributing to the cooing of the Doves in creating a backdrop for even more visitors that I had yet to discover. The honking of a Canada goose arrested my attention, especially since the sound was stationary. As if out of a cartoon, a goose was standing on top of a nearby chimney, announcing itself and hopefully connecting with a flock. Completing my auditory bathing of bird song, an owl chimed in with its rhythmic, who, who, who, who. Owls are usually finished with their night patrol by day, so this owl's presence was special. And perhaps he was still hungry and hunting? There was a special feeling to the morning and the accompaniment of all these birds validated this. It's a wonderful feeling to witness nature and especially her creatures. It's good to remember the oneness of all creation and that I am one with these winged ones. Native Americans have a phrase, 'O Mitakuye Oyasin', which means, 'to all my relations'. I say this to myself or out loud whenever I see a dead animal or bird along the road. By doing so I am honoring the creature.
